Parent Governor Elections:

We currently have two vacancies for parent governors on our Governing Body.  One vacancy has arisen due to Mrs. Ann-Marie Mitchell’s completion of her term of office.  We would like to offer our sincere thanks and gratitude to Mrs. Mitchell for all her hard work and commitment to Heamoor School as a governor over many, many years.  The second vacancy has arisen as a result of the re-organisation of our Instrument of Governance.  If you, or a fellow parent, is interested in becoming a parent governor, Mrs. Giblett is more than happy to meet with anyone to discuss the nature of the role with them.  If you wish to nominate someone, then official Nomination Forms are available from the school.  Please note:  The person you are nominating must also sign the form.

All nomination forms must be returned to the school office by 19th May.  If we receive only one or two nomination forms then these individuals are automatically elected.  If we receive more than two nomination forms then an election will be held and ballot papers will be issued to all parents.

Health Notice:  Fifth Disease (Slapped Cheek)

During the last week, we have been informed by some parents that their children are suffering from the above disease.

This is a viral disease caused by Parvovirus B19 which is spread by respiratory droplets.  It initially appears as a “flu-like” illness and then the bright red `slapped cheeks’ rash appears, followed by a reddish rash on the body.  The rash may last for up to three weeks.  A few children, but most infected adults, have mild joint pains.  It is invariably a mild illness.  By the time the `slapped cheeks’ rash appears, most patients are no longer infectious, and keeping children with the body rash away from school serves no useful purpose.  The incubation period is 6-11 days.

The illness is commonest in the 4—10 year old age group and outbreaks are common in primary schools from late winter through to early summer.

Pregnant women should try to avoid contact with affected children and consult their doctor if they think they may be infected.

  ·

Dr. Lewis from Child Health has asked us to make parents aware of the measles outbreak within Cornwall.  He strongly recommends that any child who has not been immunised, needs to have the MMR injection as soon as possible.  Dr. Lewis can be contacted on 01872 254514 should you need clarification.

Summer Uniform:

We all  have our fingers crossed that the warm summer  weather is just around the corner.  Some of our “hardier” boys and girls are already wearing shorts and dresses, which is lovely to see after the long, dark winter.

If you are now considering your child’s summer uniform, please can we remind you that if your child is now wearing a summer dress, then they should also be wearing white ankle or knee length socks, not white or grey tights.  If your child says that they feel cold at playtimes, then keep them in winter uniform for a couple more weeks.

We would appreciate it also if girls could wear a plain hairband to school, if necessary, and not a head scarf.

Parental Feedback:

We have received feedback from a parent who has expressed concerns about the use of sweets in her child’s class as an incentive for pupils.  Whilst considering this matter with staff, it led to the discussion of other related issues.  We would be grateful if you could share your thoughts with us on this matter by completing the attached form and returning it to school.  We will be asking the children for their opinions too via Class Council Meetings.  Once we have collated all this feedback, we will report back to you on our findings.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

SEAL Tip:  The theme for this half term’s SEAL work is “Relationships”.  Over this half term our children will be considering the important relationships in their lives and some of the feelings that go with these.

· Have a go at a Family Quiz Time

How well do the important people in your life really know you?  Think of some questions to find out.  Here are some to get you started.

1. What is my favourite meal?

2. Who is my best friend?

3. How many brothers and sisters do I have? (parents/carers only)

4. Who do I sit next to in class? (child only)

5. Where was I born? (parents and carers only)

 ·  Duck Race:

The PTA held a very successful `Duck Race’ on Sunday 27th April.

Lots of people came along to cheer on the ducks and a fantastic £312 was raised.

Congratulations to Daniel Nowell who won the first prize of £50.  A huge “thank you” to everyone who helped make it such an enjoyable event, particularly Louise, Kate, Steph and Melanie.

For pictures,  please look on the school website.

· Healthy Living Tip

Now is the perfect time to be getting out in your garden and doing some planting.  Why not try planting and growing some vegetables as well as, or instead of, the usual plants and flowers?

You could grow:

· potatoes in a bucket or tub

· Tomatoes in a grow bag

· Strawberry plants in a pot.

Or how about planting some sunflower seeds and watching them grow taller and taller week after week?

Even if you have little or no garden, it is possible to grow something nice to eat or nice to look at.  Think how much fun your child will have watering and checking them each day.

The theme for this half term’s SEAL work is “Relationships”  Over this half term our children will be considering the important relationships in their lives and some of the feelings that go with these.

Our special times together!

Draw a picture, do a mime or choose an object to remind you of the special times you have together.  Take it in turns to talk about the special times and say why they are special.  These might be the little things or things that are more of an adventure.  Some examples might be ….. playing on the computer together  …… going for a walk and talking about what you see … bedtime stories … trips or holidays.  Can you plan a special time in the future to do your favourite thing together?
